The Dalles is not one town. It is six or seven smaller ones stacked together, and which one you end up in matters way more than the square footage of your house.
The clifftop one
There is a neighborhood up here that people call Snob Hill. The official name is Columbia View Drive. It sits on a clifftop by Calvary Baptist and a little dog park called Firehouse Park, separated from the rest of town by a stretch of highway. You have to want to go there. And the people who live there want to be there. Christmas lights, trick-or-treating, neighbors who know each other's names. It has the vibe of a small town inside a small town.
Up on the heights
Park Place is what I call bougie new construction, and I mean that as a compliment. Well-built homes, closer together, walkable to Sorosis Park, views from up top. Scenic View Drive loops around the same park with a little more room and a lot of the same feeling. Colonel Wright Elementary serves that part of town.
The middle of town
Then there are the midtown streets, W. 10th, E. 10th, Tredit, W. 6th, where you will find early-1900s Craftsmans with the kind of history that makes you want to know who built them. Not up on the heights, not down by the river. Right in the center, where The Dalles feels most like itself.
Room to breathe
Cherry Heights and Mill Creek Road give you land, vineyards, orchards, a little acreage without disappearing into wheat country. Keep going toward Dufur or out to Rowena Dell and it gets genuinely rural, with bigger parcels and county permitting that has more flexibility, though nobody should underestimate the Gorge Scenic Area rules. I will always tell you the truth about that tradeoff before you fall in love with a view.
Why it matters
If you have kids, or aging parents, or any reason to stay, these are not just neighborhoods. They are your people, your school pickup line, your Sunday morning walk. They are worth knowing before you decide, not after.
