Walkable downtown density, the windsurfing and kiteboarding scene at the waterfront, more restaurants per block, and a bigger short-term visitor economy. If your life is built around being on the water at five, or you want maximum bustle per square mile, it earns its premium.

Where The Dalles wins

Price, sunshine, and space. Twenty minutes east buys noticeably more house and yard for the money, with more clear days each year as you leave the Cascade rain shadow. You keep the river, the cliffs, and the Gorge at your door. It is a working county seat rather than a resort town, which means a hardware store, a hospital, and neighbors who are here in February.

The honest tiebreakers

Commuting between the two is an easy twenty minutes on I-84, so plenty of households split the difference: work one town, live the other.
